Job Description

Description

Hi, We’re AppFolio.

We’re innovators, changemakers, and collaborators. We’re more than just a software company — we’re a cloud-based powerhouse that creates products and services to make our customers’ lives easier. We’re revolutionizing the way people do business, and we want your ideas, your enthusiasm, and your passion to help us keep on innovating.

We love where we work, and you can, too.

AppFolio is looking for a Senior User Experience Designer to join our fast-paced team working to bring the power of well-designed SaaS to our accounting product. The Senior UX Designer is a dedicated member of one or more small, cross-functional product development teams and is primarily responsible for prototyping and validating design solutions in collaboration with other team members. An evangelist for user-centered product design, this individual has a unique talent and passion for understanding complex systems and translating user tasks into simple interactions, furthering ease of use as our key competitive advantage.

The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, knowledgeable and eager to apply Agile and Lean UX techniques, comfortable in a fast-moving organization, excited to collaborate with Software Engineers, QA Engineers, UX Designers, and Product Managers to build revolutionary software solutions. Are you passionate about making numbers and accounting more accessible to the average person? This is the role for you!

Responsibilities:

  • Understand complex design challenges by participating alongside engineering, QA, and product in LeanUX-inspired activities such as design studios and story mapping
  • Be the voice and advocate of the customer, understanding their accounting context and processes, and communicating their needs to the team through data and insights
  • Ongoing, close collaboration with team members during each sprint, including impromptu discussions and brainstorming activities, as well as pairing with engineers on design feasibility
  • Navigating the constraints of complexity - meeting external and internal compliance needs to create an exceptional experience within those constraints
  • Supporting the team as needed with wireframes, flow diagrams, rapid prototypes and mock-ups to efficiently communicate and validate design ideas
  • Facilitate user research, in collaboration with the team, to validate ideas and prototypes, as well as conduct ongoing usability testing of the working software
  • Evangelize a cohesive user experience via the consistent use of UI patterns from our design system
  • Actively participate in the evolving overall UX team strategy, discovering and piloting new tools and resources that promote agile and lean methodologies

Qualifications

  • Strong technical aptitude, product common sense, and curiosity combined with a genuine love for products, people, and user experience
  • A strong knowledge of user research, usability testing, wireframing, prototyping, and UI design tools
  • A portfolio of software design that demonstrates your process, skills and creativity
  • Experience with a variety of UX deliverables (wireframes, user flows, mockups, prototypes, etc.), paired with a keen sense of when to choose the right tool(s) to communicate the design
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Agile UX and Lean UX methodologies and experience working in a highly collaborative, agile environment is a huge plus
  • Advanced proficiency with Figma, our preferred design and prototyping tool
  • Practical base understanding of HTML/CSS, with direct experience optimizing design concepts around the constraints of the web
  • Experience analyzing customer data to determine performance and inform experimental changes to the product experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in user experience design, preferably in the real estate or accounting areas
  • Previous experience with enterprise back office solutions, B2B services, accounting and financial tools are a huge plus
