Job Description

About the job

Description

Hi, We’re AppFolio

We’re innovators, changemakers, and collaborators. We’re more than just a software company – we’re pioneers in cloud and AI who deliver magical experiences that make our customers’ lives easier. We’re revolutionizing how people do business in the real estate industry, and we want your ideas, enthusiasm, and passion to help us keep innovating.

We are hiring a Senior Infrastructure Engineer with a strong background in database technologies, especially running MySQL at scale. You’ll be a key member of the team that provides reliable, scalable database infrastructure for AppFolio Property Manager. You’re experienced with cloud-based infrastructure automation, testing, reliability, security, and observability. Lastly, you have strong communication skills and enjoy working on a team that values openness, integrity, and attention to detail. This is an ideal opportunity for someone with an owner’s mindset and a passion for building reliable systems. This position requires on-call responsibilities.

Your impact

  • You’ll lead the effort to build, deploy, and operate the foundational database infrastructure that powers AppFolio Property Manager.
  • You will be on the team responsible for capacity planning, monitoring, backups, configuration management, container orchestration, infrastructure as code, and disaster recovery.
  • You’ll collaborate with engineering and platform teams, helping them to improve the reliability and quality of our infrastructure.

Must have

  • Experience running production MySQL databases, including capacity planning, performance tuning, replication strategies, and high availability.
  • 4-5 years hands-on experience running production, highly available, distributed, and cloud-based services, preferably in a SaaS environment.
  • Expertise with configuration management and Infrastructure as Code (Ansible, CloudFormation, Terraform, Pulumi, etc.)
  • Proven ability to diagnose and monitor performance and reliability issues across the stack: relational databases, networking, OS, containers, load balancers, etc. You’ll chase down performance problems and uncover root causes of system failures.
  • Experience with some flavor of GNU/Linux. You’re able to manage users, configure networking, and create packages in your distribution of choice.
  • Coding background: you’ve written code to perform critical tasks or in production. The exact language doesn’t matter, though we give bonus points for Go, Ruby, or Python.
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (commonly EC2, S3, EBS, Route53, and VPCs…bonus for RDS, Aurora, or EKS)
  • Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration tooling.
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years experience or equivalent work experience
  • Nice-to-Have: Production experience running other flavors of relational or no sql databases such as Postgres, CockroachDB, DynamoDB, CassandraDB, MongoDB, etc.

Compensation & Benefits

The base salary that we expect to pay for this role is $128,000-$176,000.
