The AppFolio Fraud Operations Team’s goal is to develop and enhance fraud prevention systems to ensure the integrity and security of payments across the platform. The Sr. Fraud Analyst primarily focuses on investigating suspected fraudulent transactions and determining appropriate action for resolution. This role utilizes internal and external vendor solutions and manual research efforts. The Sr. Fraud Analyst would partner with various teams to develop and implement tools and process improvements to enhance efficiency in preventing fraud. This role supports the AppFolio payments product offering in remaining safe and sustainable as the business scales.
Your impact
Support the Fraud Operations team by investigating suspected fraudulent transactions and determining appropriate action for resolution, utilizing internal and external vendor solutions and manual research efforts. Make decisions with a high rate of precision and champion new ways to get the job done.
Utilize advanced technical skills such as SQL to gather, aggregate, and leverage data-driven decisions to implement new fraud variables and rules in transaction monitoring to reduce bps losses.
Restrict fraudulent queued accounts and approve the legit cases to reduce false positive workload. Maintain a feedback loop around daily transaction reviews to ensure suspicious cases are checked, restricted, and reported accordingly.
Analyze potential gaps and risks in the new payment products and design appropriate checks and controls.
Assist in an ongoing gap analysis process and provide feedback for optimizing the fraud rules and decisioning logic.
Consistently maintain procedural alignment and communication across Risk, Fraud, Underwriting, Engineering, Product, Customer Support, Compliance, Payment Operations, and third-party vendors.
Qualifications

Attention to detail – appropriately checks all work for errors and does not let important details slip when it comes to risk investigation and its accuracy.

Must have
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as criminal justice, finance, accounting or business administration is preferable or relevant work experience.
Minimum 5+ years of previous Fraud, Risk, Payments, Banking, and/or Data Analytics
Advanced knowledge of fraud detection, fraud rule creation, fraud prevention techniques, and analyzing rule efficiency.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare and present reports to senior management and other stakeholders.
Ability to execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Excellent judgment, decision making, and problem solving abilities with minimal guidance from leadership.
Ability to stay up-to-date with industry trends and developments in fraud detection and prevention techniques.
Advanced SQL skills.
Advanced Excel skills.
Working knowledge of Salesforce and the Google Suite.
Professional certifications such as Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or Accredited Financial Crime Investigator (AFCI) is a plus.
Compensation & Benefits
The base salary that we reasonably expect to pay for this role is: $78,000 - $117,000.
The actual base salary/hourly wage for this role will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: the candidate’s skills, education, experience, etc.
Please note that base pay is one important aspect of a compelling Total Rewards package. The base pay range indicated here does not include any additional benefits or bonuses/commissions that you may be eligible for based on your role and/or employment type.
