Where customers are empowered to take on any opportunity. We show up as one team, connected by our values to be a force for good. Because together, we have the power to create extraordinary outcomes for our customers, our communities, and ourselves.

We are looking for an exceptional Sr. Director, AML & Payments Compliance to implement, mature, operationalize and manage a modern, cross-functional AML & Payments Compliance Program. This is a highly visible role that will require significant collaboration with key functional leaders across the company, and an exciting opportunity to make a real, positive impact on a growing company and help to scale a safe and sustainable business.

What You’ll Do:

Serve as the impactful primary owner of AppFolio’s AML and Payments Compliance Program by effectively managing risks and delivering practical guidance and advice to business partners while setting an effective compliance strategy commensurate with AppFolio’s business objectives.
Serve as AppFolio’s AML Compliance Officer and a subject-matter expert on Bank Secrecy Act and AML compliance and financial and payment network industry standards, including FinCen, NACHA, Card Network Rules, and PCI, as well as practical knowledge of U.S. Sanctions and OFAC regulations.
Oversee the development and implementation of a Payments compliance program tailored to AppFolio’s business and risks.
Partner with Risk & Fraud to improve and refine KYC controls and provide oversight for the First Line Payments function.
Act as the primary owner of escalated, high-risk issues, including suspected cases of illegal or improper activity, that may impact the business from a regulatory, commercial and/or reputational perspective and create timely reporting, accurate filings and risk mitigation plans.
Partner with Product team to implement product enhancements that meet compliance requirements.
Maintain oversight over third-party audits and risk assessments with a keen eye for extracting business value while satisfying compliance requirements.
Partner with Product Counsel to notify stakeholders of risks, red flags and mitigation plans.
Lead and develop a high-performing team of AML & Payments Compliance professionals.
Regularly report to the Executive Team and Board of Directors on the status of AppFolio’s AML & Payments Compliance Program.

Reporting Structure and Location:

The role reports directly to AppFolio’s Chief Compliance Officer in Santa Barbara, California. This is a highly visible and cross-functional position that will require deep knowledge and understanding of AppFolio’s strategic vision and how each team works to execute against that vision. The ability to help educate and train, while building relationships and the trust and confidence of the business, is imperative and key to the success of the program.
Remote work is possible, but we will expect regular travel to Santa Barbara and/or other AppFolio office hubs (San Diego, Dallas) to facilitate productive relationships and collaboration.

What We’re Looking For:

Commitment; Flexibility and Adaptability: A willingness to truly understand a complex and rapidly-evolving business, and to quickly adjust and re-prioritize based on changing conditions and opportunities.
Analytical Thinking: The ability to identify and define problems and extract key information from data.
Communication: The ability to effectively communicate what we are doing and why we are doing it, and to bring clarity to often ambiguous circumstances as well as provide the information people need to know to their jobs well and make decisions efficiently.
Proactive, Persistent: The desire to take the initiative without necessarily being told what to do and how to do it; the tenacity to get it done.
Work Ethic and Efficiency: A willingness to work hard, and the ability to work smart.
Teamwork and Enthusiasm: Collaborative, passionate and positive, even when faced with skepticism or adversity.

Must Haves:

10-12+ years of substantive AML compliance experience, preferably in-house, with a successful, high-growth enterprise SaaS company.
Deep knowledge of domestic data protection regulations and experience with implementing -- including training and education across the business -- a compliance-minded program.
Exceptional organizational, project management, and prioritization skills, and the ability to think and execute both strategically and tactically.
Outstanding written and oral communications skills, including the ability to communicate complex compliance and risk related issues clearly and simply.
Service-oriented, professional, with integrity and a strong ethical compass.
The ability to work with a wide variety of people, at all levels in the organization, in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

Nice to Have:

Master’s of Business Administration and/or Juris Doctor.
Experience reporting to executive leadership and Board of Directors.
Experience responding to and working with external auditors and regulators.
