Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Assistant in Training performs routine manual labor involved in golf course maintenance and minor grounds construction projects. Assists the Superintendent and staff in all tasks involved with the maintenance of the golf course: Operates variety of mowers and other equipment, utilizes small hand operated equipment, performs work involving large equipment such as tractors, loaders, and skid steers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate variety of specialized mowers on greens, tees, fairways, approaches, roughs, and around trees, fence lines, banks, and hillsides
  • Operate equipment for raking, edging, and general maintenance of sand bunkers.
  • Sets tee markers and cups on greens daily.
  • Maintains fuel and fluid levels for all types of equipment on a daily basis; reports equipment problems or failure to management immediately.
  • Returns all equipment to the designated location at the maintenance facility at end of day for washing, cleaning, preparing for future operation.
  • Perform tasks associated with cleaning of the maintenance facility office, breakroom, and shop areas.
  • Trains in the application of various pesticides and fertilizers to greens, tees, and other areas of the golf course under supervision of a certified applicator.
  • Assists in project work; grades and prepares soil base; lays sod; seeds tees, greens and fairways.
  • Operate a variety of equipment for aerating areas of the golf course.
  • Operate equipment used in the sand topdressing procedure for greens, tees, and other areas of the golf course.
  • Ability to isolate irrigation breaks for subsequent repairs by using as-builts of the system.
  • Ability to operate basic pump station functions, including the charging or re-charging of the irrigation system.
  • Monitors operation of the water feature pump functions.
  • Assists in the recording of irrigation water usage for golf course when Superintendent is not on site.
  • Monitors operation of pond diffuser systems, including compressor and diffusers.
  • Excavates and backfills ditches and trenches with hand tools; repairs and replaces irrigation system components-sprinklers, valves, piping.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as tractors, skid steers, and trucks.
  • Involved in training new employees.
  • Adheres to safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as directed by his/her supervisor.
  • Able to work long periods of time unsupervised.
  • Responsible for keys to equipment and vehicles used on property.

Qualifications

Job Qualifications and Physical Requirements:

  • Physical strength, stamina, and agility.
  • Ability to follow and communicate oral and written directions.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to climb stairs.
  • Can spend 8 hours or more a day sitting, standing, walking, kneeling.
  • Ability to safely move to and from various points within the golf course and surrounding property.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment, exposure to sun and hot temperatures, as well as cold and inclement conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds up to 50 feet.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in routine conversation in person, via telephone or two-way radio.
  • Ability to perform manipulative skills that require hand-eye coordination such as a calculator or computer and be able to see objects closely as in typing or reading a report.
  • Ability to produce information in written form.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and concentrate while performing tasks with interruptions.
  • Duties include flexibility in working weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Pay and Benefits:

$28.00 to $30.00, depending on education and experience.
