We are looking for a Manager of Data Science Engineers to join the Data Science & Analytics Department. Your team will be instrumental in developing data models in dbt not only for our chat-to-data skill in Realm-X, structuring our product data in the most optimized fashion for LLM interpretation for customers, but also for delivering curated data models to power departmental insights, success metrics, and robust high-dimensional data for root cause analysis across key initiatives in Sales/Marketing, Resident product, Client Services, and our broader AppFolio Property Manager product.
Your Impact
The base salary that we reasonably expect to pay for this role is $148,000-$200,000.
The actual base salary for this role will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, education, experience, etc.
Please note that base pay is one important aspect of a compelling Total Rewards package. The base pay range indicated here does not include any additional benefits or bonuses that you may be eligible for based on your role and/or employment type.

Your Impact
- Setting Vision & Strategy
- Develop the “data roadmap” for the highest import, most commonly derived metrics on customer/resident behavior, and structure multipurpose source logic into consolidated dbt models.
- Balance high-impact near-term wins while building customer and product adoption data foundations to power departmental and company-wide success. Our ability to extract and deliver value from our data to our customers and internally is a key opportunity for market differentiation and solidifying our position in the PropTech space.
- Continuously evaluate how best to leverage and implement best practices to guide a cross-functional team of Data Science Engineers, analysts, and scientists to curate data models in dbt to build connective tissue of applied business logic on hierarchical data that power company-wide shared metric definitions, naming conventions, and insights.
- Driving Outcomes
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ideate on permutations data structures that cater to multiple enterprise-scale products and applications.
- Perform data discovery of stakeholders' needs, help design solutions, and collaborate with Engineering on how their infrastructure should affect data transformation design.
- Design and enhance data models, schemas, quality testing, and database designs to support efficient and accurate data streaming in production for the chat-to-data use case.
- Create, maintain, and augment some of our most complex data pipelines and transformations, and ability to lead advanced analytics, data quality, and data modeling projects from end-to-end, while mentoring other DSEs, and setting best practices in methods/techniques/tooling.
- Develop data documentation, including data dictionaries, data lineage, and awareness of integration processes.
- Fostering Growth
- Partner with Data Science leadership to build and maintain shared infrastructure/tooling for data visualization, model development, deployment, and orchestration while focusing on the developer experience.
- Lead, Hire, and manage the deliverables and careers of a newly consolidated team of data science engineers.
- Minimum of 8+ years of work experience in a Technical Data role, Analytics/Data Engineering or Data Science.
- Full stack Data Science experience: Demonstrated success in bridging the gap between high-level project requirements and complex application data
- Data engineering: expertise in dbt, engineering best practices, and skills to build and deploy model pipelines to production.
- Expertise in building and contributing to semantic data layers
- Data analysis and exploration: Exploratory data analysis skills are critical for every full stack data scientist, and the results help answer critical business questions.
- Applied Statistics - Statistical modeling and support of production systems. Understanding of statistical concepts and practical experience applying them (Familiarity with machine learning and infrastructure - model training/evaluation, ML applications).
- Proficiency in SQL and Python-based (pandas or pyspark) tooling for data transformation.
- Communication - You have a wealth of experience helping product teams make great decisions with data.
