Job Title: Accounting Manager

 

Reports To: Director, Financial Operations

 

Location: Irvine, CA

 

Job Responsibilities

 

The Accounting Manager is a key leader who works closely with the Accounting Director and accounting team to ensure the accurate, timely and efficient delivery of financial information to MarWest Commercial clients. Each MarWest Commercial client is a separate entity with a unique budget, vendors, investments, and priorities. The Accounting Manager partners with the department leaders, property managers and support team to promote client retention, build healthy relationships internally and externally, improve processes, train, reduce liability and improve overall operations within the accounting department of MarWest Commercial.

 

The Accounting Manager is a support leader for any client financial issues and must have an excellent working knowledge of General Ledger Accounting (GAAP), understanding of AP and AR processes, client onboarding, accounting staff onboarding and engage in proactive risk management. The Accounting Manager serves as the first point of contact for the Property Accountants on questions relating to processes, concepts, and general assistance in managing workload.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

Financial Reporting

 

  • Coordinates with the Accounting Director to ensure quarterly & monthly financial statements are prepared in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Responsible for production and review of financial statements on a quarterly & monthly basis. Attention to detail to identify potential errors or areas of risk including: variances to budget, linkage to supporting schedules, lingering bank reconciliation items, cash shortages, proper coding of general ledger activities/coding, investment management opportunities, etc.
  • Troubleshoot any accounting or reporting issues in collaboration with the Property Management team as needed.
  • Listen to clients, plan for their changing needs, monitor client satisfaction and follow up on client inquiries, requests or complaints as requested by the Accounting Director.
  • Work closely with the Accounting Director to identify any areas of concern relating to financial production efforts and work to rectify/provide additional resources ensuring timely and accurate financial statement delivery.

 

Leadership

 

  • Lead and develop the team to ensure client financial deliverables are completed accurately and timely.
  • Identify and implement service levels, and key productivity, quality, and efficiency metrics
  • Maintain staffing coverage
  • Review staff’s work product as appropriate & make recommendations as needed to allow for proper staffing adjustments or additions
  • Support an environment that provides direction and promotes continuous learning and development. Promotes hard work in others by setting the example, being present, accountable and engaged with team.
  • Work closely with other support teams (Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Operations) on key deliverables and resolve issues as they arise. Client retention is a key measure of success, so performance issues need to be surfaced with functional management as soon as possible.
  • Provide generalized and ad-hoc training to Property Managers as needed. Collaborate with Property Managers to achieve desired results in product and process.
  • Attend Board/Finance Committee meetings when appropriate. Collaborate with Property Management teams and clients to be able to present important issues to the client along with appropriate recommendations.
  • View matters from the clients’ perspective as well as the companies’ perspective to find approaches that work for both. Adept at handling contentious situations and managing change.
  • Build organizational and industry relationships. Promote collaboration and remove obstacles to teamwork across the organization.

 

Other Duties

 

  • Oversee the client onboarding and off-boarding process as it relates to the accounting functions.
  • Partner with CPAs on tax matters as appropriate.
  • Use independent judgment to resolve issues and provide guidance to team members. Ensure that consistent policies and practices are being followed.
  • Demonstrate understanding of internal controls and segregation of duties requirements to drive implementation of best practices.
  • Prepare and maintain procedures for specific job duties.
  • Liaison with IT and other departments on various projects, initiatives and process improvements impacting the Accounting functions, as needed and assigned, including future migration from Jenark to a new platform as approved by MarWest leaders and corporate.
  • Drive the recruiting, hiring, and separation of personnel.
  • Participate in special projects as needed & other duties as assigned.

 

Additional Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Conduct business at all times with the highest standards of personal, professional and ethical conduct.
  • Perform or assist with any operations as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules.
  • May participate in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, policies, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensure all safety precautions are followed while performing the work.
  • Follow all policies and Standard Operating Procedures as instructed by Management.

 

Supervisory Responsibility

 

Oversees a team of Accountants and others as deemed appropriate by business needs. Ensure personnel meet all service level expectations and escalate/resolve any performance issues with the appropriate Supervisors.

 

Education & Experience

 

  • Experience supervising a high-volume transaction processing organization is desired.
  • 3+ years of experience leading team members accountable for responsibilities similar to those required for this position.
  • 6+ years of technical accounting experience
  • College degree in business management or equivalent related experience.
  • Experience with AppFolio software is a plus.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Applications, especially Word and Excel (e.g. pivot tables, v-lookups).
  • Excellent oral presentation and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in English.

  • Talking and hearing occur continuously in this position.
  • Hours over and above 40 will occur.

 

Work Environment

 

  • Occasional evening meetings may be required.
  • Consistent and regular attendance required.
  • Flexibility to work from home (hybrid schedule)
